Week 2: April 6-April 10

Measuring things with non-standard units...

measuring the net with a crayon

Measuring himself with King Kong cards.

Silent reading BINGO

Adrian's art project for today was to make a creature out of cardboard.  It's super creepy and gross.  I think influenced by scary videogames he and his BFF J. talk about?!?!  But I hated to stifle the creativity so this is what he came up with.  He said it has an "endoskeleton."

View of part of the skeleton underneath the paper.

I don't know what to make of this thing...I'm going to have nightmares...

Business Project: Adrian couldn't make up his mind.  I suggested he sell home plans (he wants to be an architect), his old toys, artwork, open a Dojo and teach karate...after much back and forthing, and indecision as you can see below, he finally decided to sell his artwork.  Sorry for the shadows in the pictures...I'm doing the best I can--no time to find better lighting while making dinner!! ;-)

 Designing his business logo

These are some of the "goods" he's going to sell.

He picked up a book and did silent reading for a good 30-40 min ON HIS OWN without my telling him to.  I was amazed.  This is our favorite Captain Underpants book--the one about Kipper.  Makes us all laugh out loud every single time!

He is recording Sebastian give a YouTube lesson on how to draw gorillas.  LOL

Picnic lunch outside.  We scattered bread crumbs and watched how the ants tried to take them away.  Fascinating!

A much valued new tradition is an after dinner walk.  We used to do this after dinner every night.  But when Carlos changed jobs last year, he started getting home too late.  Now that we are all home, we can take our stroll again.  The boys have recently been discovering sports...much to my joy!  I love every sport in the world.  Today Seb picked out a soccer ball to take with us...I almost died of surprise!  It was so fun!!  We played keep away (Papa and Mama vs. the boys) the whole way.

Then they played a little basketball as well!!!!!  I'm shocked.

Up next at 7pm...Karate.  Then showers, math facts, and Little House on the Prairie.  Thanks to that book we've had discussions of land policy, racist viewpoints of Native People, and also wasting resources (Seb and Adrian wondered how Laura and Mary got their art supplies...I was like "There WERE no art supplies."  They seemed humbled that Amazon didn't deliver to the doorstep of the prairie house.  Sigh.)

Wednesday, April 8

I got these wonderful cards for my birthday!  :-)

Business project, his art gallery

Silent reading in a very messy guest room/office

Walk/soccer after dinner...in PJs around the neighborhood!

Now Karate.

Thursday, April 9

This is Adrian's brochure for his business.  He made the envelope...

The pamphlet inside

Another addition to the gallery of art for sale

He made a video advertising his company...it's his first attempt on Screencastify...it's lacking in coherence and message!  LOL.  But it was a fun attempt.  You should check it out (you'll get the joke after you listen to the video...).

Journal entry for today (topic from Lake Shore)

Seb had a video call with Mrs. Clinton this morning--Adrian popped in for that for a few minutes! ;-)

Adrian had a tough day...he kept flipping out over nothing and demanding his way.  He threw stuff....  He didn't get what he was screaming out (eating cereal in front of the TV downstairs--he'd make a mess), but even though I "won" the battle, it didn't feel good.  As a result, he didn't do silent reading because he was "punishing" me.  I didn't really care...He loves to read so I'm not too worried about this long term.  Honestly, he's thrived at home, but I worry about how much he loves his tablet and videogames, even though I don't let him spend that much time considering.  But he's still on it way more than I'd like.

I'm honestly not that worried about the academics.  It'll sort itself out.  We do a lot of "learning" at home on our own over the summer.  But I AM worried about the social-emotional piece.  The boys have been getting along pretty well considering.  But I do worry a lot about Adrian's anxiety going back to school.  In general he has been a lot easier than usual...he has much less anxiety than he does when he goes to school every day...But he was no picnic today, that's for sure.

Friday, April 10

Watching Netflix at lunch...I caved.

Here is the link to the google doc with al the assignments for the week (we're still working on a few odds and ends):

Adrian did Lexia, Happy Numbers, typing.com, and some Seesaw.  We finished Little House on the Prairie last night...lots of fodder for discussion: racism, land policy, minimalism... :-)  They liked it and can't wait to to start the next book in the series!
